Panchkarma

Todays hectic lifestyle,which results in improper diet,producing waste materials not beneficial to the body. They are not properly excreted through the body, resulting in the hazardous accumulation. These can evolve into serious specific diseases, ultimately damaging an individual’s health and wellness. The ancient Indian science of ayurveda mentions certain procedures which help in preventing diseases’rather than curing a person after the diseases have occurred.

Panchkarma is a group of five procedures which help to remove the waste material from the body,helping in the elimination of the root cause and resulting in quick control over the diseases.It is a unique, natural, holistic, health-giving series of therapeutic treatments that cleanse the body’s deep tissues of toxins, open the subtle channels, bring life-enhancing energy thereby increasing vitality, inner peace, confidence and well-being.

Shodhana treatment aims at removal of the causative factors of somatic and psychosomatic diseases. The process involves internal and external purification.Shodhana therapies expel the aggravated doshas from the body. Panchakarma treatment focuses on metabolic management. It provides needed purificatory effect, besides conferring therapeutic benefits. This treatment is especially helpful in neurological disorders, musculo-skeletal disease conditions, certain vascular or neuro-vascular states, respiratory diseases, metabolic and degenerative disorders.

Branches of Panchkarma: Vamana - emetic therapy (supervised vomiting),Virechana - laxatives, Vasti - herbal enema,* Nasya - nasal administration,Rakta Mokshana - blood letting.

Pre-Panchakarma procedures (external and internal oleation and induced sweating) .As the dosha are located in remote areas of the body, generally there is no direct outlet for their elimination. Therefore, some preparatory treatments are first induced in order to soften the dosha and move it to either the stomach or the intestine from where the dosha is eliminated using the above-mentioned techniques.The Panchakarma therapeutic process appears quite simple in its application. However, its effects are powerful and effective.

VAMANAM: Medically induced vomiting. Use of emetics artificial vomiting is induced using herbs like, strong teas of locorice, salt and calamus. It is usually indicated for people with disorders of ‘Kapha’ This is the cleansing process for the upper respiratory tract and upper digestive tract.

"Effective in Kapha rogas and some skin diseases like leukoderma etc."

VIRECHAN: Medically induced purgation which cleanses the lower digestive tract. Use of laxatives – A strong purgative like senna or rhubarb is given. It is normally used to eliminate high Pitta (fire) from its site in the small intestines.

"Almost all types of skin diseases and chronic rheumatic problems will be relieved by this."

NASYA: It involves the administration of medicines through the nose in the form of drops or powders. Nasal administration medicinal oils or herbal mixtures are inhaled or pour in nose by drops (mixed with oils or ghee). This stimulates the nerve ending of nasal cavities resulting in better blood circulation in the sinuses.

"Highly effective for all kinds of headaches, paralysis, depression, stress, pain around the neck and shoulders, eye diseases etc."

BASTI: use of medicated enemas – cleaning enemas are primarily used to dispel high Vata (air) from the colon and to remove Doshas.

SNEHABASTI: Medicated oil mixed with some herbal paste and salt, is administered through the anus. The quantity of material will be decided according ti the strength of the patient and diseasBeneficial in chronic nervous disorders, joint problems and skin diseases.e. One with the lowest dose of oil is called Mathravasthy.

Beneficial in chronic nervous disorders, joint problems and skin diseases.

KASHYABASTI: Enema done with a mixture of honey, salt, herbal paste, herbal decoction and medicated oils. This will be preceded by one or two Snehavasthy according to the condition of the patient.Combination of Sneha and Kashaya vasthys are helpful in some chronic rheumatic problems. Urinary stones, nervous disorders and in some gynecological problems.

RAKTA MOKSHANA: Blood letting Mainly very useful in skin disorders like eczema,psoriasis.

Samsarjan Karma: On completion of Panchkarma a special diet and instructions are prescribed from Centre according to Prakruti (Constitution) and Life style.

 

 

Rasayan: It is a special form of tonification therapy. This is best done after the panchkarma.

Treatment of the disease consists in avoiding causative factors responsible for disequilibrium of the body matrix or of any of its constituent parts through the use of Panchakarma procedures, medicines, suitable diet, activity and regimen for restoring the balance and strengthening the body mechanisms to prevent or minimize future occurrence of the disease.
